Books

I have written or contributed chapters to all of the books on this page. My two full-length books, Out of the Shadows (2019) and In the Shadows (1995) are largely intended for a general gay male audience, although they have been of interest to women and to psychotherapists working with gay men. Some other books shown are aimed more at “professional” audiences in psychology and HIV prevention, but will still be of interest to many other readers. Out of the Shadows: Reimagining Gay Men’s Lives is focused on reconstructing the idea of what it means to “be gay” in contemporary America, and the personal histories, self-experience, communities and relationships that affect gay men’s lives, both young and old. In the Shadow of the Epidemic: Being HIV-Negative in the Age of AIDS centers on the lives of men living in the AIDS epidemic, but also discusses broader emotional issues that are pertinent to gay men of all ages.

A Queer World: The Lesbian and Gay Studies Reader, edited by Martin Duberman at NYU, covers a very broad range of gay, lesbian and gender issues, including sexual and gender identities; the issue of gender itself; gay-related social, economic and political matters; sexual politics; the psychology and science of sexual orientation; aging; and AIDS. Policing Public Sex: Queer Politics and the Future of AIDS Activism, edited by Queer Bedfellows, focuses on the topics of public sex, AIDS activism, the policing of sex, and queer politics. Acting on AIDS: Sex, Drugs & Politics, edited by Joshua Oppenheimer and Helena Reckitt, presents contributions on the science of HIV transmission; new directions in prevention; the global AIDS epidemic; and traditions of gay activism.
